Game Report: Blackburn Rovers 5-2 Birmingham City
In what proved to be a high-scoring and eventful final weekend in the EFL Championship, the Blues fell to middle-of-the-table Blackburn Rovers in a goalfest.
The two teams were even for 70 minutes, tied 2-2 at that point before Blackburn went on a 3-goal tear to end the game at 5-2. But as the score suggests, Rovers held the upper hand through most of the game. managing a substantial 58% possession and outshooting Birmingham by a whopping 18-5. Then again, coach Lee Bowyer fielded a largely 2nd choice side for the second straight week. The Blues’ goalscorers were centerback Kristian Pedersen and the ever reliable Lukas Jutkiewicz, who netted just 4 minutes after coming on as a substitute.
Elsewhere in the Championship, Wycombe Wanderers made a herculean effort to stay up, beating Middlesbrough 3-0 away. Rotherham United, who had a massively compressed schedule to end the season, led at Cardiff City before finally conceding and drawing 1-1. But in the biggest relegation battle, Wayne Rooney’s Derby County avoided going down by the skin of their teeth, drawing 3-3 against Sheffield Wednesday. That score was enough to doom Wycombe, Rotherham and Wednesday to the drop.
