Blues News: the important stuff to know about BCFC

An embarrassing loss, a recovery and big stuff coming up

Birmingham City suffered a stunning loss at Shrewsbury Town last weekend, going down 2-3 to the worst team in EFL League One. That was with 80% possession in which the Blues managed to generate just 12 shots. With unfavorable results elsewhere (Wrexham and Stockport County both won 3-0), the team dropped to 4th overall. However, they rebounded on Tuesday with a much more commanding performance at 11th-place Exeter City Wednesday, winning 2-0 in a downpour. This was a rescheduled game from an earlier postponement for international callups.

Jay Stansfield scored PKs in both games, bringing his total for the year to 7 in 10 games. That puts him 2 goals clear of Alfie May and Tomoki Iwata (who also scored at Exeter), both of whom have played more games. It’s also just 2 goals short of his total two seasons ago playing 36 games for…Exeter.

With that midweek win Birmingham City moved back up to 3rd, 1 point behind Wrexham, who have played two more games, and 5 points behind Wycombe Wanderers, who have played one more game.

The Blues have another double-game week coming up. The first will be this Sunday, December 1st, in the FA Cup. That will be at Blackpool, who are 16th in League One. The game kicks off at 7:00am and will not be televised anywhere, including the UK. The Blues have not played Blackpool yet this season in league play.

Then on Wednesday, December 4th, is a big game and finally it will be on TV here in the US. At 1:45pm the Blues will be hosting Stockport County. Stockport are 4th in the standings but are 3 points behind the good guys on two additional games. They did not play a midweek game this week and their FA Cup tie is on Saturday against Brackley Town. You’ve likely never heard of them; they play in the National League North, which is part of the 6th tier of English soccer, three levels below League One. County can obviously not afford to lose the game against the Brummies and will be working on more rest after a weaker opponent. It should be an excellent afternoon’s entertainment; you can watch it on Paramount+.
