Blues News: Staying on top2 games, 4 points
This past week was another double-game week for the Blues. Last Saturday they hosted Exeter City and more or less cruised to a 1-0 win, holding the visitors without a single shot in the match. Exeter also suffered a double-yellow red right at the end of the game. Wycombe Wanderers kept pace, winning 2-1 at Mansfield Town.
Then yesterday came the big matchup: the return fixture at Wrexham yesterday. A relatively rare US TV appearance for the Blues (but not for Wrexham of course) saw the traveling Birmingham City denied an obvious early PK for a handball, followed by an Owen Rathbone goal in the 9th minute to put Wrexham up. The Blues then were denied a second PK, again for a handball, but tied it up after another 9 minutes, Lyndon Dykes getting the goal. It stayed that way for the rest of the game, ending in a draw after a pretty tough game all told.
That put the Blues 3 points clear at the top of the table, with a game in hand over Wycombe and a 1-goal GD advantage. However, that could disappear tomorrow as the Blues are obviously idle and Wycombe plays Northampton Town (9:00am). Northampton are 20th in the table. Depending on the result, that sets up an interesting Tuesday, with both Birmingham and Wycombe playing evening games. Wycombe hosts Barnsley (1:45pm) and the Blues are on the road again at Huddersfield Town (2:00pm, Paramount+, yay!). Neither is an easy match: Barnsley are 5th and Huddersfield are 4th and breathing down Wrexham’s necks, just 4 points behind them with 2 games in hand. Both opponents have games tomorrow, which means of the 4 the Blues will be the most rested.
After that Birmingham City’s next match will be next Saturday against Rotherham (13th).
