One double-game week down, another coming

Birmingham City played two games last week. The first was an FA Cup tie at Blackpool, which they won 2-1 comfortably on goals by Lyndon Dykes and Lukas Jutkiewicz. They move on to the third round, in which the Premier League teams join the fray. The Blues avoid them all, and will play at Lincoln City (9th in League One) at 9:00am January 11th.

Then a major win on Wednesday, beating Stockport County 2-0, Alfie May scoring both times. This was a complete beatdown of the 5th-place team in the league, with the home team holding a massive 68% of the possession (a stat that is fast becoming par for the course). With that win Birmingham is back up to 3rd in the league, 1 point behind Wrexham with 2 games in hand and 3 points behind Wycombe with 1 game in hand.

This week the Blues play a league match at Barnsley (9:00am Saturday, no US TV). Barnsley sit in 8th. Making up distance on the top two may be tough; Wycombe play 6th-place Reading but Wrexham play 23rd-place Burton Albion. Then on Tuesday it’s back to knockout play as they head to Exeter City (1:45pm, no US TV) to play the second round of the Football League Trophy. The Blues were in Exeter just a week ago Tuesday and easily handled the home side 2-0. Exeter is 11th in League One; a repeat performance seems likely.
